Marcisso Household Water Treatment Installation

Water Problem:

This customer had a water test reveal their

arsenic level was at 15 ppb, which is above the EPA limit of 10 ppb. They also had hard water they wanted to remedy. Ideally, the homeowner needed all the water treated for arsenic. Unfortunately, the “standard” whole house option using adsorption media for this house would not stay efficient very long due to the other water parameters. Reverse osmosis units can treat all the water in the home, but they are costly, use more electricity, and take up a lot of room in the basement. The homeowner called in FONTUS for a solution to treat the water safely within their household budget.

Marcisso Household Water Treatment Installation Solution:

FONTUS installed a “mixed” bed water softener which uses media used to soften the water (called “cation” media) and another media (called an “anion”). Think cathode and anode. Cation media removes dissolved ions that have a positive charge, while the anion removes negatively charged ions. This unit will soften the water and remove all the arsenic that has a negative charge (valence 5). As a security measure for the homeowner, we installed a point-of-use reverse osmosis system with an extra storage tank for the drinking water. The mixed bed water softener removes the bulk of the arsenic from the whole house, which was the original concern. Following up with a drinking water system would ensure that the reverse osmosis system would remove all the arsenic from the drinking water even if the mixed bed stopped working for some reason. The mixed-bed water softener and point-of-use reverse osmosis unit was a good solution because it addressed the ultimate concern, which was the arsenic at the high concentration of 15ppb. Arsenic below 50 is typically considered a long-term drinking water hazard. Homeowners have different comfort levels for their water, which FONTUS considers when recommending a homeowner solution. Finding a solution in a water treatment system tailored to your family’s needs is our specialty.
