Any home with a well can have radon in its drinking water. When naturally occurring uranium in the soil breaks down, radon gas is released. Because radon is an odorless and tasteless gas, it’s important to do radon testing.
Radon in well water can increase the chances of you or your family members developing cancer. The Maine Bureau of Health recommends that radon in drinking water be no more than 4,000 pCi/L. Studies have shown that nearly one in five Maine wells have radon concentrations this high or higher.
Radon Abatement Process
Because radon is a health hazard, all water samples are required to be sent to a state-certified testing facility. At Fontus, we work with our customers to help facilitate the sampling process and interpret the results once they have been received from the laboratory. If it is determined that radon is present, a Fontus specialist will discuss the mitigation systems available, so our customers have the information necessary to make an informed decision for the next steps in their mitigation process.
Once Fontus has installed a radon mitigation system a post-installation water sample is taken by the customer and sent to a state-certified testing facility. A Fontus specialist will review the results of the post-installation test with the customer to ensure the mitigation system is working properly and that the radon level is in accordance with the Maine Bureau of Health recommendations.
