Varadi Household Water Treatment Installation

This customer had a unique well, it is located within 1,000' from Sebago Lake, the public water source for Portland and neighboring towns.

Water Problem:

The water in this well has naturally occurring salt, iron, hardness, and a low pH. It also produces very, very little water. The amount of water a well produces is measured as “recovery,” meaning how quickly the water flows back into the well after you pump water out of the well. For example, recovery of 1 gallon per minute (GPM) means that if we pumped 1 gallon of water out, it would take one minute for an equal amount of water to flow into the well again. This particular well has less than 1/2 GPM of recovery, and it’s a shallow well. As a result of the poor recovery, the homeowner would frequently run out of water, often unable to run a laundry load for lack of enough water.

Varadi Household Water Treatment Installation Solution:

The challenge with this well is threefold: solve the contamination issues in the water, solve the ineffective and prolonged recovery rate, and provide a solution to the well’s low capacity. FONTUS installed an acid-neutralizing filter followed by a high-efficiency water softener to address the contaminants. We also added two 225 gallon storage tanks with booster pumps to address the water availability issue. The water flows through the filter and softener, then flows through a special valve called a needle valve which allows us to measure and control how quickly we fill the tanks from the well. They currently are filling at 0.3 gallons per minute. In addition, we installed a clean water backwash loop for when the water systems backwash, which means the system will pull treated water out of the tanks rather than the well itself. Because this was a seasonal home, we installed the two storage tanks under the deck, which keeps the sun off them. Update: this home was recently sold, and the new owners are converting it into a FULL-TIME residence. We will return to install a small tank in the crawlspace as well.
