Salt Bridge & Salt Mushing

A salt bridge is a hardened crust of salt that forms above the water line inside the brine tank, creating a false floor that prevents salt from dissolving into brine and stops the regeneration cycle entirely. Salt mushing is a related problem: a sludge of dissolved salt settles at the bottom of the tank and blocks brine from forming correctly. Both issues are easy to misread as a simple salt shortage.

Exhausted or Fouled Resin Bed

The resin bed is where hard water minerals are actually exchanged. Over time, iron, sediment, or simple exhaustion can compromise the resin so it can no longer capture hardness minerals, even when regeneration completes normally.
